Nigerian troops have intercepted 174 men suspected of suspicious activities en route to Niger border communities. Learn about the operation and its implications.

Troops from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Sector 4 in Diffa, Republic of Niger, have intercepted 174 able-bodied Nigerian men who were attempting to cross into border communities within Niger.

The suspects were apprehended in Gueskeru, a crucial border town linking Nigeria’s Yobe State with the Republic of Niger.

Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the MNJTF spokesperson, stated that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects were traveling from different Nigerian towns to the Lake Chad region, allegedly for fishing purposes.

Concerns were raised due to the porous borders, which have become safe havens for terrorist groups such as the Lakurawa group, notorious for numerous attacks on border communities.

The presence of so many able-bodied men raised security concerns, as their access to terrorist-infested areas could present a substantial threat.

As a result, Sector 4 troops stopped their progression and initiated an extensive profiling and interrogation process to assess intentions and confirm there was no threat to regional security.
