“Tragic Boat Mishap Claims Nearly 40 Lives in Zamfara
A devastating boat accident in Zamfara results in the loss of approximately 40 lives, raising concerns over waterway safety in the region.
On Saturday, it was reported that approximately 40 individuals perished in a boat accident in Gummi town, which serves as the administrative center of Gummi Local Government Area located within Zamfara State.
According to Hassan Dauran, the Director of Emergency at Zamfara State’s Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA), roughly 50 passengers were onboard the boat when it sadly met with a mishap.
According to him, only a small number of individuals were saved at that particular time and sadly, most of the passengers – predominantly women and children – did not survive.
According to an eyewitness, the individuals who passed away were en route to their farms early on Saturday morning when their boat overturned and sank in the river.
According to the witness, 53 farmers, including children, were on board the boat. Unfortunately only twelve individuals survived – among them being the captain of the vessel – while a tragic 41 lost their lives.
Justice Hassan Lawal (retired), the Emir of Gummi, expressed his condolences to the families affected by the unfortunate incident that resulted in loss of lives.

He labeled the occurrence as highly distressing and appealed to Allah for pardon of those who perished, while also asking for strength on behalf of their bereaved families.
The newest occurrence contributes to the unsightly pattern of nautical mishaps that has resulted in numerous fatalities throughout Nigeria in recent years.
