Tragedy in Benue: 20 Feared Dead in Devastating Boat Accident
A boat mishap in Benue State leaves 20 people feared dead, sparking calls for improved waterway safety and rescue operations in the region.
Twenty people, primarily women and children, are feared dead after a boat accident on the River Benue near Ocholonya in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State that occurred on Saturday.
According to reports, the victims were on their way back to Doma in Nasarawa State after visiting a market day in Ocholonya village when their wooden boat overturned.
Adanyi Adanu, a community leader and resident of Ocholonya, confirmed the tragic incident to journalists.
“According to him, the boat that capsized yesterday on Ocholonya market day was transporting women and children back to Odenyi-Doma in Nasarawa State when all onboard tragically drowned.”
Melvin James, the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, confirmed the incident on Sunday.
He stated that the victims were traders from the Apochi and Odenyi communities in Doma, Nasarawa State.
“I’ve been informed about the mishap, and reports suggest that over 20 people may have died. Local divers report recovering bodies, but I’m awaiting an official update to confirm the exact number,” James stated.
The chairman mentioned that steps are being taken to collaborate with Nasarawa State officials in comforting the affected families. He also revealed that contact has been made with the Nigerian Navy for assistance in rescue operations.
At the time of filing this story, reports on the number of casualties remain conflicting. Some sources claimed that 20 bodies have been recovered, while others suggested that several people are still missing.
