Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and serving as the Senate Minority Leader, has expressed his disagreement with the demand for the resignation of PDP acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Lliya Damagum, labeling it as untimely and inappropriate.

The call for Amb. Damagum’s resignation was initiated by Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga, the member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo state, who accused the national chairman of being biased towards the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and failing to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting since taking over from Senator Iyorchia Ayu as the PDP national chairman.

In a statement released by his media aide, Emmanuel Eche’Ofun John, and published by The Nation on Sunday, Senator Moro clarified that the demand made by Hon. Ugochinyere was a personal viewpoint and did not represent the stance of PDP federal lawmakers, particularly PDP senators.

Senator Moro emphasized that the timing of the call, just days before the highly anticipated NEC meeting of the party, was unnecessary and only served to create unnecessary tension within the party.

Regarding the upcoming NEC meeting, Senator Moro highlighted that it would provide an opportunity for NEC members to express their views on the party’s current affairs.

He expressed optimism about engaging in a comprehensive discussion during the meeting, addressing critical issues concerning both the party and the nation as a whole.

Senator Moro underscored the significance of the national chairman’s position within the party, emphasizing that any suggestion to open up the seat or allocate it to a different region other than the North Central was unfounded.

He pointed out that the PDP’s constitution, as the fundamental law governing the party, stipulates the presence of two deputy chairmen and outlines the procedure to be followed in case of a vacancy.

Senator Moro clarified that in the event of a vacancy, the deputy chairman from the region of the embattled national chairman would assume the role, reiterating his stance against any proposal to open up the seat or allocate it to a region other than the North Central.
