Fear grips a Borno community after a Boko Haram commander issues a new threat, heightening security concerns in the region.

Residents of Banki, a border town in the Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, are gripped by fear due to a deadly threat allegedly made by Mulwuta, an individual believed to be a Boko Haram commander.

Local sources report that Mulwuta has issued a warning to the people of Banki, stating they would be “slaughtered like goats” if they fail to “repent” by the start of Ramadan. This ominous message has caused widespread fear within the community, which has previously suffered multiple attacks from insurgents.

On Sunday, counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama reported that the threat has increased tensions among residents. Nevertheless, some community members remain resolute, downplaying the danger and recalling their resilience during notorious Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau’s rule.

“One resident noted that ‘Even when Shekau was alive, the town did not fall to the terrorists,’ expressing confidence in their community’s resilience.”

Borno State, situated in the North East region of Nigeria, has been at the heart of the Boko Haram insurgency for more than ten years. Communities such as Banki have frequently suffered from severe violence.
