William Troost-Ekong has stated that he was taken aback by his exclusion from the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has not called up the center-back since the team’s September 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sao Tome and Principe.

The exclusion of Troost-EKong from Nigeria’s roster for the 2023 AFCON finals, which will take place in Cote d’Ivoire in January of next year, raises questions about his future on the international scene.
The 30-year-old made a suggestion that he is still up for selection.
“No, I haven’t given up playing football internationally. I don’t think I should decide on it yet. Yes, I still fully intend to support the team. Like usual, I’ve been watching the games. According to Troost-EKong, he has been a member of the team for around eight years, as reported by Soccernet.
“It has been a bit of a surprise for me,” he continued. But all I can do is put forth a lot of effort at my club. I believe I’m demonstrating my continued ability to be a huge asset to the team.
Yes, we will monitor the situation with AFCON. Nevertheless, I still want the best for Nigeria and am extremely eager.
Coach Peseiro has already sent in his preliminary team roster for the two-year tournament.
By January 7, 2023, a final 27-man roster is anticipated to be presented to the Confederation of African Football, or CAF.
