Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele’s opinion on PEPT: The judiciary backed the rule of law over feelings
In announcing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the victor of the presidential election on February 25, 2023, Senate Majority Leader Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele made it clear that the judiciary had supported the rule of law above sentiment.
Before entering active politics, Bamidele worked as a lawyer. During the hearing of the two main petitions, she served as the star witness for Tinubu and the All Progressive Congress, APC.
President Tinubu said in a statement on Thursday that “politics is over, it is now time for governance.” He also pleaded with the petitioners to accept the tribunal’s decision and work with him to present the “Renewed Hope Agenda” to Nigerians.
I applaud the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) for prioritising the rule of law over sentiment.
“The Justices’ decision has once more confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received a resoundingly high percentage of the vote in Nigerians’ presidential poll on February 25.
“I also want to congratulate President Tinubu on the Tribunal’s declaration of his win. Therefore, I kindly request that the petitioners work with Tinubu’s government to spread the word about the “Renewed Hope Agenda” to Nigerians in the best interests of our dear nation. It is now time for governing; politics is over, he declared.
Wednesday saw the election of President Tinubu affirmed by the five-member panel presided over by Justice Haruna Tsammani.
