Security Agencies Cannot Designate Any Individual As A Terrorist Sponsor – Gumi
Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has expressed his disagreement with security agencies declaring individuals as terror financiers.
During an event organized by Daily Trust, Gumi responded to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit’s recent list, which included his close associate, Tukur Mamu, and 14 others as terror sponsors. Gumi emphasized that Mamu’s case is currently in court, and it is inappropriate to conduct a media trial.

He questioned the authority of security agencies to label someone as a terrorist financier, stating that only the court of law should have the power to make such declarations.
Gumi further emphasized the importance of allowing the court to decide the verdict and, if found guilty, Mamu should face the consequences. As a public figure, Gumi acknowledged that people from all walks of life approach him, and it is not his role to turn them away but rather to guide them.
He drew a parallel with pastors who may encounter criminals seeking redemption but cannot take them directly to the authorities. Gumi concluded by stating that the situation involving Mamu is a misunderstanding between him and the committee that was investigating him.
