The Premium Bread Makers Association of Nigeria (PBAN) recently discussed the factors contributing to the rising cost of bread in Nigeria.

According to PBAN, a significant reason for the increased cost is the reliance on imported ingredients for bread production.

This dependence on imports is primarily due to the unavailability of a strong productive base in the country.

PBAN President, Emmanuel Onuorah, highlighted the impact of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine on bread manufacturing in Nigeria.

Since Nigeria imports wheat from both countries, the exchange rate volatility caused by the war has further exacerbated the cost of bread production.

Onuorah emphasized the importance of bread as a staple food in Nigeria, stating that it should be easily accessible and affordable for all.

He also mentioned that Nigerians have specific preferences when it comes to bread, such as its sweetness, softness, and succulence.

Failure to meet these expectations could result in a loss of business for bread producers.
