Prison experts explain the reasons behind the decision to separate Nigerian celebrity Bobrisky from other inmates during detention. Learn more about the unique circumstances and considerations involved.

Prison authorities have provided insights into the rationale behind the separation of the controversial figure Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, from other inmates at the correctional facility, while refuting allegations of a VIP section.

During an appearance on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Friday, Bishop Kayode Williams, the Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, elaborated on the different accommodations designated for inmates based on their classifications.

He stated, “There are specific accommodations for condemned prisoners, those who have received death sentences, and they must not interact with other inmates. The second category includes convicted inmates, who are considered the primary residents of the prison.”

Regarding Bobrisky’s circumstances, Williams remarked, “When it comes to the accommodations for males, would it be appropriate to place Idris, with his transgender appearance, in the general cell? The initial step is to determine the appropriate treatment for someone in his situation.

He has been assigned to a special area for protective custody due to the potential risks associated with his appearance. Given that he presents as a woman and behaves accordingly, there are homosexual inmates who might resort to extreme measures.”

Francis Enobore, the former National Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, supported Williams’ statements, noting that the service conducts profiling for each inmate to ensure both their safety and the overall security of the prison environment.

“Yes, he admitted in court that he is a man, yet he presents himself as a woman. Some inmates are unrepentant homosexuals, and it is evident that without proper precautions, we could face significant security challenges,” he stated.

Enobore has denied allegations regarding Bobrisky being assigned a private section within the prison, asserting, “There is no such arrangement as a private apartment or any special accommodations in the facility.”

The controversy surrounding Bobrisky’s imprisonment emerged earlier this week when Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, released a voice note in which Bobrisky purportedly stated that after his conviction for the misuse of naira notes in April, his godfather, in collaboration with the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, facilitated his placement in a private apartment to serve his six-month sentence.

In a related development, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board announced on Thursday the suspension of two deputy controllers overseeing the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos, in connection with the alleged bribery claims involving Bobrisky.
