Price drop: Tomatoes, yam become cheaper in Nigeria

Tomatoes and yam prices have dropped in Nigeria, offering relief to consumers. Learn more about the factors behind the price reduction.

In July 2024, the National Bureau of Statistics reported a month-on-month decrease in the prices of tomatoes and yams.

In its July report on Selected Food Price Watch, NBS revealed this information.

In July 2024, the cost of one kilogram of tomatoes decreased by -26.43% from N2,302.26 in June to N1,693.83 as documented in the report.

In July 2024, Tomatoes experienced a year-on-year rise of 203.57 percent amounting to an increase from N557.96 in July 2023 to N1,693.83.

Likewise, there was a 10.82 percent decrease in the average cost of one kilogram of Yam tuber from N2,021.55 to N1,802.84 recorded in June 2024.

In July 2024, the cost of Yam soared by a staggering 234.23 percent when compared to its price in July 2023 – rising from N539.41 to N1,802.84 on a year-on-year basis.

Furthermore, the NBS data indicated that during the period being evaluated, there was a rise in prices for eggs, beans and garri both month-on-month and year-on-year.
