A tragic Jeju Air plane crash has resulted in the presumed deaths of all 179 passengers and crew members onboard. Investigations are underway.

According to Yonhap News, fire officials indicate that 179 out of the 181 passengers on a Jeju Air flight from Bangkok are presumed dead following a crash during an emergency landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday morning.

Rescue teams are thoroughly examining the wreckage, with bodies still trapped inside the fuselage. Two survivors—a passenger and a crew member—were rescued from the tail section and are now receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

The Boeing 737-800 attempted a belly landing at 9:03 a.m. local time due to an apparent failure of its landing gear.

Witnesses reported hearing loud “bang” noises when the aircraft collided with the airport’s perimeter wall, causing it to split into two sections and catch fire. Footage shown by local broadcaster MBC indicates a potential bird strike as the plane was descending. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.

If verified, these fatalities would mark South Korea’s most severe domestic civil aviation disaster and the first major casualty incident involving a low-cost carrier in the country, as reported by JoongAng Ilbo.

Other notable aviation disasters in South Korea are the 1993 crash of an Asiana Airlines flight in Mokpo, which resulted in the loss of 68 lives, and a 2002 Air China incident near Gimhae Airport that led to the deaths of 129 out of its 166 passengers.
