Presidential election: INEC chairman issues lawsuit threat in response to PDP’s claim of rigging
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, has warned that a lawsuit may result from claims that he manipulated the presidential election.
After the PDP leadership’s Friday request for his resignation, the electoral chief responded to the party.
The opposition demanded that the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) look into the chairman amid claims of election result tampering.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu’s press secretary, said in a statement that the call was misguided and urged the PDP to back up its allegations in court.
Why did the party not present proof to support “the baseless charges,” the spokeswoman questioned.
Oyekanmi said that the PDP also failed to provide proof of Yakubu’s interference with the uploading and transmission of election results from voting places.
The aide claimed that the INEC “does not rig elections”, noting that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, “has protected the integrity of the electoral process”.
Oyekanmi reminded the PDP that it had rejected the results of the election on February 25 and that it should follow the route of honour by continuing to argue its case until a decision is made.
It’s like putting the waggon before the horse by putting the identical arguments the party plans to make in court on the newspaper pages and demanding for the resignation of the INEC Chairman.
The PDP is being reminded that levelling defamatory accusations against the INEC Chairman’s person is unlawful, he continued.
