President Tinubu dispatches ECOWAS delegation to Niger Republic

President Bola Tinubu stated that an ECOWAS delegation has been dispatched to Niger Republic to intervene in the country’s attempted coup.

The president remarked following a meeting with Benin Republic President Patrice Talon at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

He stated that Talon was directed by ECOWAS to travel immediately to the West African country known as the most coup-prone in the region.

Tinubu is the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Heads of States and administration, and the body has chosen to discourage the issue of undemocratic changes of administration in the region by the military.

Talon was ordered to lead the ECOWAS group to Mali and Burkina Faso, where the military is in control, during a meeting between Tinubu and the Presidents of Niger and Benin a fortnight ago.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an attempted coup was reported in Niger Republic early Wednesday.

According to local sources, the presidential guards have taken President Mohamed Bazoum hostage in the presidential residence in Niamey. (NAN)
