Arthur Judah Angel, a 70-year-old man, was tragically murdered by his own son Arthur Angel Jr., who is only 17 years old as revealed by the Edo State Police Command.
The local community has been shocked by the incident, which was fueled by a disagreement over anticipated funds from Amnesty International.
While addressing reporters in Benin City, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the Command’s Public Relations Officer narrated how a young suspect had persistently accused his father of receiving Amnesty International funds and threatened him. On July 15th, 2024, the situation took a horrific turn when he murdered his sleeping father using a sledgehammer and then buried him in an unmarked grave at their home.
“The investigation process was described by Nwabuzor who stated that on July 15th, 2024 at approximately 9:00am, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ugboha division located in Edo State received a complaint regarding a shallow grave found within the premises where Arthur Angel Jr. resided with his father. Immediate action was taken as mobile units were dispatched to assess and excavate the site upon arrival. During this procedure, it became apparent that foul play had occurred due to identifying sharp trauma inflicted onto Arthur Judah Angel’s head after exhuming and examining his body. Following proper protocol; they transported the remains directly to Uromi Hospital mortuary for further processing.”

Initial probes indicated that Arthur Angel Jr. engaged in several disputes with his father regarding the expected funds, which he assumed had already been obtained by the deceased individual. In a state of fury, it is purported that the perpetrator utilized a sledgehammer to hit his father on the head and ultimately caused his demise.
Following the arrest, the suspect was transferred from Ugboha to Edo State Criminal Investigation Department’s homicide section for additional investigation.
Arthur Judah Angel, the victim in question, was highly regarded as both an advocate against capital punishment and a champion of human rights. He devoted his efforts to promoting this cause through Life Wire International Foundation – an organization he founded himself. Arthur tirelessly worked towards ending the death penalty by traveling across more than 15 different countries where he organized art exhibitions showcasing thought-provoking drawings that aimed at raising awareness on this issue.
