The musician brought himself in at the Ikeja police headquarters in Lagos after the fight with the unnamed officer, accompanied by his attorney and a member of his family.

Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat singer, is being held in detention for assaulting a police officer in the state, although the Lagos State Police Command has denied torturing him.

The musician brought himself in at the Ikeja police headquarters in Lagos after the fight with the unnamed officer, accompanied by his attorney and a member of his family.

Later, Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector General of Police, issued a warrant for his arrest.

Since the musician brought himself in, police authorities, according to State Police Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin, have not and will not touch Seun Kuti.

We are smart enough not to torture him, despite the expectations of some people that are emotionally charged.

He promised that the Command will work to ensure that the case would be thoroughly and openly investigated.

“We won’t make a weak argument. He has never been touched and will never be touched with a finger. Full and transparent investigation, as we promised,” said Hundeyin.

Contrary to some people’s sentimental expectations, we are wise enough to refrain from torturing him.

Ready To ‘Defend Himself’, Seun
The afrobeat musician’s attorney, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, claims that his client would vigorously defend himself in court at the appropriate time and place.

Olumide-Fusika made this claim. Shola Soyele, the judiciary correspondent for Channels TV, got a press release dated May 16th. The attorney was responding to some remarks made by Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the Lagos State Police, in the media.

Olumide-Fusika claims that his client anticipated that “having completed his investigative work, Mr. Benjamin Hundeyin, a law enforcer, would proceed according to law by sending the file containing his report of investigation for legal evaluation towards possible prosecution.”

Although he had been with the police since 8:00 am on Monday, May 15, 2023, Mr. Seun Kuti observes that he was only asked to provide a statement to the police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, at about 8:00 pm that day, after Mr. Benjamin Hundeyin had already finished and published his investigative report above.

Since Mr. Benjamin Hundeyin has already conducted the inquiry, released, and published his report on it, Mr. Seun Kuti has offered his interlocutors a declaration to the effect that no beneficial purpose could be achieved by any comment from him.

The attorney added that he and his client are waiting to see what the police would do with the crime accusation against Mr. Seun Kuti. Mr. Kuti is prepared to defend himself against what he called “Mr. Hundeyin’s published ‘investigative findings’,” according to the attorney.
