A coalition including seven opposition political groups was formed on Wednesday with the intention of strengthening democracy in the country.

To start the coalition known as the Coalition of Concerned Political Parties, political party leaders convened at the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party in Abuja.

Members of the coalition were the African Democratic Congress, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressives Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Peoples Allied Movement, and Zenith Labour Party.

Remember that in November, PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, in the company of an Inter-party Advisory Council delegation, voiced concerns about the nation becoming a one-state party and urged the opposition to recognise the necessity of unity.

The coalition asked the legal system to preserve Nigeria’s democracy and free itself from interference from the executive and political branches, even as it expressed concern about the degree of instability the nation is experiencing.

The SDP’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, discussed the foundation of the alliance by saying, “We looked into the issue of the judiciary.” If it survives, the judiciary represents the last hope for the average person.

The degree of volatility the nation is experiencing worries us. Recent events in the states of Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kano, and the Plateau make it abundantly evident that the judiciary must proceed with utmost caution while making some of its decisions.

The judiciary ought to become more adamant about rendering decisions that will stand the test of time. They shouldn’t permit us politicians to compromise their integrity, judgement, or ability to make decisions that are recognisable and sound globally.

The alliance is not opposed to the Inter-Party Advisory Council or in favour of a merger, according to the SDP Chairman.

Speaking during the meeting on behalf of the acting national chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, was Setonji Koshoedo, the PDP’s acting national secretary. He said that the coalition will provide a fierce resistance.

Chief Ralph Nwosu, the national chairman of the ADC, stated that the goal of the alliance is to “strengthen our democracy.” It is evident that those in authority are attempting to silence reasonable criticism.
