Over 570,000 Nigerians Compete for Limited Customs Jobs

More than 570,000 Nigerians have applied for limited job openings in the Nigeria Customs Service, highlighting the fierce competition for government employment in the country.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) revealed that it has received an overwhelming 573,519 applications for the 3,927 job vacancies in its 2024/2025 recruitment drive within just a week of opening the portal.

This follows an earlier announcement by Finance Minister Olawale Edun, who revealed that the Federal Government has authorized the recruitment of 3,927 officers into the NCS.

Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) for NCS, shared the update and highlighted the tremendous response to their recruitment effort.

He stated, “I want to analyze the number of applicants. We have two categories of officers: support staff, who are professionals, and general duty officers.”

For general duty, there are three categories of ranks. Within the superintendent cadre (general duty), 249,218 candidates submitted applications.

Regarding the superintendent cadre (support staff), he mentioned, “We have 27,722 applicants holding HNDs and university degrees.”

For the inspector cadre, requiring applicants to have a National Certificate in Education (NCE) or a National Diploma, we received 115,634 applications for general duty positions and 12,952 for support staff roles.

For the customs assistant cadre, applicants are required to have secondary school certificates. There are two categories: those with a minimum of five credits that include Mathematics and English, and those without these specific subjects.

Maiwada stated, “We have 153,593 applicants for general duty and 14,400 for support staff.”
