Opposition groups intend to target INEC sites in Oyo – Makinde
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State has finalised measures to assault some of its facilities, according to the governor of the state, Seyi Makinde.
On Sunday, Makinde made the accusation.
According to Obasanjonews24, there have reportedly been attacks on a few INEC locations around the nation.
The most recent cases were reported a few days ago in the states of Osun and Ogun.
Makinde, who took over as the state’s governor in 2019 and is running for re-election, has now warned that certain members of the state’s opposition political parties are preparing to assault INEC facilities.
He revealed this in a statement sent by his campaign committee’s media department.
Dotun Oyelade, the committee’s chairman, gave Obasanjonews24 access to the statement on Sunday night.
He cautioned the commission to exercise caution.
Oyelade stated, “We would like to warn the opposition in Oyo State not to even think of committing such a heinous crime, as it cannot save them from losing the upcoming election. We have observed the untoward and ignoble development of perpetrating arson against INEC facilities by unscrupulous elements in the society.
But if the opposition in Oyo State believes it can use that model to confuse the populace and claim an unjustified triumph, it should abandon that notion because it will not be tolerated there.
The electoral body, INEC, and security agencies in the State need to be attentive and on watch, and security has to be increased at all institutions that store election-related materials, he added.
