The widespread corruption in Nigeria’s voting system has alarmed a former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

But he urged Christians to get involved in politics immediately to bring about change.

The former president made the announcement while giving an address at the Gospel City, Ogunmakin, Ogun State, which was hosting the 57th Annual Convention and 67th Anniversary of The Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT).

The role of the church in nation building at a time like this was the subject of a speech by the speaker. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo thanked the church for successfully organising the convention and exhorted Christians to shine as examples of moral leadership in the political sphere. He bemoaned the fact that, although politics shouldn’t necessarily be corrupt, its reputation is tarnished by the conduct of people who engage in it.

Chief Obasanjo emphasised the difficulties the country was facing, such as insecurity, pessimism, poverty, and depression, and he urged the Church to act as a positive force by referring to its function as the “salt of the world” to effect significant change.

“Even if we live in it, we are not of it. Corrupting corruption has a huge impact on society. He declared on Saturday, “We are the light of the planet.

“A city perched on a hill cannot be concealed. Jesus, who did not identify with the world when He was on earth, is what we are to emulate.

The former president emphasised the significance of the church pressing for justice, fairness, and equity across the social, political, and economic spectrum of the country.

He compared the church to salt, observing that, just as food without salt is flavourless, so too does a church that is unable to carry out its mission lose its value.

Living in the real world is not always easy. Christ had warned us that trials and afflictions would come so that we may be ready and that, like him, we would triumph in the end.

“The church must be distinct and set itself apart from the balance of the world,” Obasanjo continued.

Pastor (Dr) E. O. Abina, the General-Overseer of GOFAMINT, described his experience with Obasanjo while he was president in a previous speech.

He disclosed that he had observed the former president conducting Sunday school lessons while at the Aso Rock Chapel in Abuja.

He said that Obasanjo’s realisation demonstrated his unwavering dedication to spiritual development and his commitment to preaching God’s Word.
