The Independent National Electoral Commission has reaffirmed to the Nigerian electorate that people who have not reached the legal voting age would not be permitted to vote in the wake of claims of underage voter registration ahead of the 2023 elections.
Victor Aluko, INEC’s director of voter education and publicity, made this statement on Sunday during a live appearance on Rubbin’ Minds on Channels Television.
“I can guarantee that the voter list will be thoroughly cleaned up and that no minors will cast a ballot in 2023.
We will be accepting new claims based on public concerns when we complete dealing with Friday’s claims and objections, he added.
Because of this, it’s crucial that those who found any problems with the register report them in the proper places so they can be properly documented.
Aluko said INEC’s revision officials at various levels might act on the complaints after compiling them.
How can we address complaints if a complainant doesn’t inform us of their complaint?
In order to have a very clean registration as we get ready for the general elections, I’m suggesting that we first take the register and then work on it.
On election day, he promised, “and I’m promising you that no underage person will come to our polling units to come and vote.”
For the first time in the nation’s election history, INEC last month made the whole register accessible on its internet.
However, many Nigerians have documented multiple instances of duplicate registration and minors voting.
Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner, promised Nigerians on Thursday that the organization was dedicated to purging the registry and punishing anybody found responsible for interfering with its integrity.
