Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been released by the Department of State Services (DSS) to undergo an independent medical checkup.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said the IPOB leader was examined in an undisclosed Abuja hospital on Friday.

“We are pleased to inform you that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu met with his choice personal physician yesterday (Friday) in a hospital in Abuja, outside the facility of the State Security Service (SSS),” said Ejiofor.

“I witnessed the consultation as part of the protocol.” The medical evaluation went smoothly and efficiently, and he (Kanu) will be moving on to the next stage soon.”

Kanu has been detained by the DSS since June 2021, when he was apprehended and returned to Kenya.

Kanu constantly requested an independent medical examination of his health condition while in detention.
