The Nigerian Bar Association has requested that the police provide all information regarding the officer who fatally shot Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, a lawyer, in Ajah, Lagos.
In a statement released on Monday, the NBA called the killing of one of its members “cold-blooded murder” and asked for more information about it. The killing has sparked outrage, condemnation, and condolences from the police, who say that the policemen involved have been detained.
The NBA released a statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Habeeb Lawal. “While the NBA acknowledges the sympathy and regret of the police authorities over this incident, the NBA President has unequivocally demanded that the Nigerian Police officially disclose and immediately release to Nigerians the fuller details of the errant officer and other officers responsible for this heinous act,” the NBA said.
Following the NBA’s discussions with the police on the incident, the organisation claimed to have learned that “ASP Drambi Vandi, an officer who has been in the police service for 33 years,” is the person accused of killing one of its members.
NBA’s Intention
Along with denouncing the murder, the NBA president expressed his condolences to Raheem’s family.
Mr. Maikyau prayed for Mrs. Raheem’s soul to rest and pleaded with all the members and worried Nigerians to be composed while we make sure the law is followed.
Additionally, the NBA has decided to join her family as a complainant in the case.
According to the statement, “The NBA President has in this regard formed a committee consisting of National Officers, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, and the Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch with a mandate to follow up and ensure a rapid but complete investigation of this crime.”
The NBA is also concerned about an earlier incident involving the Ajiwe police station.
“During the NBA’s engagement with police authorities over this deadly incident, the NBA confirmed that on or about December 7, 2022, another young man named Gafaru Buraimoh who was erroneously going to buy fuel was murdered in Ajah in a similar manner to our member by a police officer assigned to the now-famous Ajiwe Police Station.
The NBA wants everyone to remember what they learned from the #EndSARS Protest and is worried that the Nigerian Police seem to be going back to when they were violent.
“The NBA will not only go to the bottom of this occurrence, we will eradicate it and take steps to deal with anyone found accountable in every lawful way,” the NBA promised association members. We’ll make sure that no other citizen experiences this again.
The NBA’s Lagos Branch Chairman, Ikechukwu Uwant to, has previously demanded that Raheem be given prompt justice.
He said that he had talked to Lagos’s police chief, Abiodun Alabi, who “assured us that the investigation and prosecution of Mrs. Raheem’s killer will be quick.”
