The former head of state urged everyone involved in the health ecosystem to constantly be ready to modify their practices to meet current medical standards.

Regular investments in the thriving health sector, according to General Yakubu Gowon (ret. ), will go a long way toward meeting Nigerians’ medical demands.

The statement was given by the former head of state on Friday at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration in Benin City, Edo State, which he had visited as president of state on May 12, 1973.

The retired general and his wife Victoria visited the hospital for the golden jubilee celebration after 50 years had passed. Five decades ago, a 360-bed facility started out; today, it is a 960-bed healthcare complex.

Gowon urged everyone working in the healthcare sector to always be ready to adjust to new medical procedures.

“The healthcare environment is continually changing, and in order to satisfy the complex demands of our patients, we must constantly adapt and innovate. Let’s reaffirm our commitment to giving all Nigerians access to high-quality healthcare, Gowon remarked.

The UBTH received praise from the Federal Government for successfully establishing itself as a preeminent referral facility.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, stated that “The UBTH has, over and above that, begun to provide itself as a major centre of excellence.”

It is enhancing its own standing in cancer treatment. It will soon be producing more resources for cancer treatment.

The UBTH has been of great assistance to the Edo State Government in providing healthcare, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Godwin Obaseki emphasized in his remarks that public institutions need sufficient funding to provide high-quality healthcare.

“Health financing must now be the area of emphasis. Government cannot anymore bear the majority of the cost of providing healthcare services alone, especially in light of the fact that there are now more private healthcare providers than public ones, such as UBTH.

The UBTH is the sixth institution in Nigeria’s first generation of public health postsecondary institutions.
