Nigerians should anticipate further fuel price reductions as the competition between NNPC and Dangote Refinery heats up, say PETROAN and IPMAN.

Petroleum retailers and marketers have suggested that Nigerians can anticipate further decreases in premium motor spirit prices, as a new price competition has begun between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and Dangote Refinery due to fuel reductions by both companies.

This follows NNPC’s announcement on Monday of its new petrol prices, set at N860 per litre in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with a nationwide price of N880 per litre.

Reports indicate that NNPCL retail outlets along the Kubwa Expressway in Abuja, including those in the Central Business District opposite the company’s headquarters and other locations, have adjusted to a new pump price of N880 per litre.

Remember that just six days ago, Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price to N880 per litre at MRS filling station and other fuel outlets in Abuja.

The development has ignited a new petrol price battle between NNPCL and Dangote Refinery.

As a result of the situation, Nigerians now have to decide whether to purchase petrol from NNPCL or Dangote retail outlets as they engage in a price war.

Remember that since February 2025, Dangote petrol has been sold at a more favorable price compared to NNPC.

Responding to the situation, Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of Petroleum Retailers Outlets Owners Association, and Abubakar Maigadi from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria indicated that Nigerians can anticipate further decreases in petrol prices due to competition between NNPCL and Dangote Refinery.

Gillis-Harry suggests that Nigerians hold a favorable position within what he refers to as an essential business framework involving NNPCL and the Dangote Refinery.

He emphasized that the war has brought some relief and smiles to Nigerians who have been struggling with the increasing cost of living.

The portal now displays the updated price.

This price reduction will greatly alleviate the financial burden for many Nigerians striving to make ends meet.

The decrease in PMS prices is anticipated to have a positive effect on the lives of Nigerians.

He mentioned that they are working with NNPCL to reduce petrol prices for the benefit of both Nigerians and marketers.

Maigandi expressed that the current developments in the downstream oil and gas sector exemplify the advantages of deregulation.

In his view, “It’s not surprising since Dangote petrol is being sold at that price.”

This is why we’ve been urging the government to deregulate the sector. Doing so will lead to a decrease in prices, and we are already seeing increased interest from investors.

“The decrease in petrol prices brings happiness to Nigerians and marketers,” he stated.

remembers that the pricing battle between NNPCL and Dangote Refinery began on September 15, 2024, when Dangote Refinery initiated its PMS rollout.
