Mikel Obi denies that Victor Osimhen’s wage demands blocked his move to Chelsea, clearing up rumors about the failed transfer.

Mikel Obi, a former Chelsea and Super Eagles player, has denied allegations that Victor Osimhen’s potential transfer to Chelsea fell through due to wage demands in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

Although Chelsea had made a last-minute effort to acquire the Nigerian striker, they were unable to complete the agreement.

According to reports, Al Ahli made an offer of €80 million ($88.5 million) for Napoli but Osimhen was hesitant about leaving European football which caused a delay in the possible transfer.

During his appearance on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel disclosed that the transfer almost went through and he was instrumental in the talks.

He stressed that mutual concessions were made by both sides, however unforeseen issues led to the breakdown of the agreement at the eleventh hour.

“We were close to finishing it within hours,” elaborated Mikel. “Both Victor and Chelsea cooperated, but we ran into some problems with paperwork and medical matters that couldn’t be sorted out in time.”

Chelsea’s ambition was praised by Mikel, who also revealed that Osimhen had a strong desire to join the club. Unfortunately, when the deal fell through, the forward experienced intense disappointment.

He revealed that he had a discussion with Osimhen, providing him encouragement and support following the closure of the transfer window.

According to Mikel, he advised him to maintain focus and exert effort despite his disappointment of the outcome. He also likened the player’s resilience and determination to that of Chelsea strikers Didier Drogba or Diego Costa who possess a similar grit which is necessary for the team’s success.

Mikel refuted any speculation of conflict between Osimhen and Chelsea, affirming that their rapport is still amicable.

On a season-long loan, Osimhen has joined the Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray after being praised by Mikel as one of Africa’s top players and world-class strikers.

Despite the current circumstances, Mikel maintains his confidence that there is potential for Chelsea and Osimhen to negotiate a transfer in the upcoming times.

Mikel stated that he will persist until he succeeds in bringing him to the club, as he is not only Nigerian or a friend but one of the best. Mikel recognizes and believes in his potential contribution to Chelsea.
