During the 34th meeting of the Board of Directors of the Defence Health Insurance Limited (DHIL), Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, emphasized the significance of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the healthcare of military veterans. Matawalle highlighted that the approved 2024 budget of DHIL reflects the President’s prioritization of quality healthcare for veterans.

The meeting, held at Ship House in Abuja on March 20, was attended by esteemed members of the Board, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral I. Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and Managing Director of Defence Health Maintenance Limited (DHML), Surgeon Rear Admiral AB Afolayan (rtd).
In addition to the budget approval, Minister Matawalle also highlighted the board’s endorsement of a severance allowance equivalent to 40 percent of the staff’s basic salary.
This decision further demonstrates the organization’s commitment to the welfare of its employees. Matawalle emphasized the importance of effective operation of the health insurance scheme in support of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, which will be facilitated by the DHML 2024 budget. He urged the Board of Directors to exercise prudence and efficiency in managing the organization’s resources to fulfill DHML’s mandate.
Recognizing the commendable efforts of the DHIL in providing healthcare services to veterans, Minister Matawalle directed the Permanent Secretary to establish a technical committee.
This committee will address the challenges faced by the organization and devise effective strategies to overcome them.
The Minister’s directive reflects his commitment to ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the DHIL, ultimately benefiting the healthcare services provided to military veterans.
