Man City Stages Comeback to Avoid Upset Against Leyton Orient
Manchester City fought back from behind to secure victory against Leyton Orient, preventing a shocking defeat in a thrilling match.
Leyton Orient midfielder Jamie Donley made history in the FA Cup with an incredible shot that helped the League One team unexpectedly take the lead in their fourth-round match against Manchester City.
In the second half, City completely changed the game. They equalized when Rico Lewis’ shot deflected off new signing Abdoukodir Khusanov and went in, followed by Kevin de Bruyne scoring from close range 12 minutes before the final whistle.
However, all of that seemed rather insignificant. The home side’s goal was truly unforgettable.
Donley, a 20-year-old who has represented both England and Northern Ireland at the youth level, launched an impressive shot from 50 yards out. He noticed City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega was out of position and capitalized on it with his attempt. The ball bounced off the crossbar before hitting the German keeper on its way into the net.
The endeavor immediately brought to mind Ronnie Radford’s legendary performance for Hereford against Newcastle in 1972.
For a long period, it seemed that the goal would cause a similar upset as Pep Guardiola’s team wavered on the verge of experiencing their first FA Cup defeat by a lower league opponent since 2018.
The Leyton Orient fans’ chants of ‘sacked in the morning’ were quickly quieted when City equalized. Guardiola then brought on Phil Foden and De Bruyne, relying on his star players to secure a safe outcome for his team as they shifted their focus to Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.
