Minister Wike stands firm on his decision to continue demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory, boldly declaring he will not be deterred by opposition or protests.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the ongoing demolition of properties in the nation’s capital, asserting that he will not yield to intimidation.

Wike stated that the structures being dismantled by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) are unlawfully constructed on government land.

“I would like to take this opportunity to inform Nigerians and residents of Abuja that we are not intimidated by blackmail,” the minister remarked during the distribution of operational vehicles to security agencies at the FCTA Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday.

“Indeed, it is unrealistic to expect to hold a position like this without facing attempts at blackmail, especially concerning Abuja. There are numerous land grabbers, and some of us have decided to take a firm stand. Let the heavens fall. It is preferable for the heavens to descend now than for us to continue fasting for a place in heaven.”

‘What is Unjust is Unjust’

In recent months, the FCTA has escalated its efforts to demolish what it considers illegal structures in various estates and informal settlements in Abuja.

According to Wike, while some of these structures present security threats, others have been erected on government-owned land.

This initiative has sparked backlash and protests; however, Wike has maintained that there will be no reversal of this course and has pledged to pursue further demolitions of illegally constructed buildings and shanties.

“We will prevent anyone from encroaching on government land for any reason, regardless of formal approval. We will not be swayed by your status, whether you are a civil rights advocate or a media figure,” Wike, who previously served as the governor of Rivers State, stated during the event.

“What is unjust is unjust; no level of intimidation will deter us. Individuals are unlawfully occupying government property without the necessary approvals or documentation.”

Wike’s remarks coincided with the Senate’s decision to initiate an investigation into the demolitions occurring in the FCT, establishing a committee to examine the situation.

The Senate’s action came in response to a motion put forth by Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory. She expressed apprehensions regarding the ongoing demolitions and requested a directive to halt them.

Additionally, an investigative committee was established, led by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, to examine the demolitions. This committee is anticipated to summon Wike to the Senate to provide clarification on the rationale behind the demolitions occurring in the capital city.
