Lagos soldiers prevent woman from taking her own life
Mrs. Francesca Spark attempted suicide by plunging into the Lagos lagoon near the 81 Division Officers’ Mess, Marina, but was stopped by soldiers serving under 81 Division, according to the Nigerian Army.
Spark was swiftly rescued by the troops of 65 Battalion stationed at the officers’ mess, according to a statement from Lt.-Col Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division Nigerian Army.

“The medical team from the battalion administered first aid to her and helped her stabilise.” Her husband, Mr. Spark Oghene Ovie, who lives in Awoyaya, Lagos, received her after the family was notified and she stabilised, according to the statement.
The soldiers’ observation skills, bravery, gallantry, and inventiveness were praised by Major General Muhammad Takuti Usman, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81st Division.
In such a dire circumstance where a fellow citizen’s life was at stake, he expressed his satisfaction with the soldiers’ application of their crisis management training.
Usman confirmed that troops are prepared to support key agencies in times of emergency. He defined such an action as a military operation other than war carried out during catastrophes or natural disasters.
In times of need, he reassured the locals that the Army would always be there to safeguard them and their belongings.
