Labour Party’s senator has been sacked by the Appeal Court, with the PDP candidate being declared the winner

According to reports, the Labour Party’s Darlington Nwokocha was elected as the senator for the Abia Central Senatorial District, but his election was declared void by the Court of Appeal.

Col. Austin Akobundu (Rtd), a former national organising secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was proclaimed the legitimate winner of the senatorial race by the court.

This was announced on Saturday night in a post on the PDP’s verified X handle.

The statement says as follows: “The Appeal Court has ruled that Austin Akobundu (Rtd), the former National Organising Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is the legitimate winner of the Abia Central Senatorial District in Abia State.

At the National Assembly, the two PDP senators from the South East zone are Senator Austin Akobundu of Abia Central and Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu West.

According to OBASANJONEWS24, Nwokocha was declared the winner of the election in February after receiving 92,116 votes, while Akobundu was reported to have received 41,477 votes to place second. The returning officer of the election was Professor Herbert Udo of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU).
