Kwara Poly Management and Students Demand Justice for Student Allegedly Killed by Police

The management and students of Kwara Polytechnic are calling for justice following the alleged killing of a student by police, urging authorities to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.

The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin administration along with the student body urge for fair treatment following the untimely death of Abdulqoyyum Bamidele, a 21-year-old student purportedly killed by police in the state capital.

On Thursday, the students of the polytechnic marched to the state police command headquarters in Ilorin. The march was led by Olalekan Isola, President of their Student Union and Abdulwahab Habeebullahi Arewa, National President of National Association Kwara State Students. They demanded justice for one of their fellow students called Abdulqoyyum Bamide who is a ND2 student studying Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the institution.

The students’ union expressed a strong sense of accountability for the purported regrettable occurrence between a student and police officers.

Today, we had a prolonged discussion with the concerned police authorities that stretched over three hours.

He stated that our conversations yielded positive results and we are collaborating closely with the management of the institution as well as other important parties to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this issue.

Sources indicate that an unidentified officer from the Kwara State police command purportedly pursued Abdulqoyyum to a confined location in Fate area of Ilorin.

The occurrence remains unclear, however upon discovering Abdulqoyyum he was observed to have sustained a severe injury on one of his arms.

According to a source, he was subsequently transported to the Kwara State General hospital where he passed away on Thursday morning and received an Islamic burial later that same day.

Abdulqoyyum Bamide reportedly lost a considerable amount of blood and ultimately passed away from his injuries while receiving treatment at the state general hospital.

Engr Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, the institution’s Rector, expressed sorrow over the passing of the ND 2 Electronic Engineering student in his response.

According to Mrs. Halimat Garba, the institution’s spokesperson in Ilorin on Friday, a tragic incident happened around GRA in the Ilorin metropolis on Wednesday, September 4th of 2024.

The details surrounding the demise of the talented and hopeful pupil remain uncertain due to several unverified accounts and versions.

According to the statement, “Justice will be served as deemed appropriate based on the final reports of the matter by school management.”

The students were commended by the Rector for their composure and refraining from taking matters into their own hands. It was emphasized that as the investigation progresses, The polytechnic community is steadfast in its pursuit of responsibility and fairness on behalf of Abdulqoyyum.

On Friday, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, spokesperson for the state police command in Ilorin announced that an investigation into the matter had begun.

After completion, she stated that the police command would release the result of their thorough investigation.
