The governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has been asked to concede loss and follow the ruling of the Appeal Court in Abuja, which upheld Nasiru Gawuna as the legitimate victor of the state’s governorship election on March 18.

Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, advised Governor Yusuf not to go to the Supreme Court after Governor Yusuf lost at the Election Petitions Tribunal and the appellate court.

Former State Commissioner for Rural and Community Development Kwankwaso made the call on Friday in response to the Court of Appeal’s decision over the contentious Kano State gubernatorial election.

He said, “Given the evidence that nailed him at the Tribunal and the Appeal Court, respectively, it would be another mission impossible for him to drag the case to the Supreme Court. As a result, he needs to go and rest until 2027.”

He also praised Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the APC candidate for governor, calling his confirmation as the state’s next governor an achievement of democracy and the rule of law.

Kwankwaso argued that Governor Yusuf wasted the limited resources of the state by going to the Appeal Court, claiming that he should have accepted the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s decision in good faith.

He stated that it would be preferable for him to settle down and get ready to run again in 2027 under a strong political party now that the Appeal Court has also ruled that his election victory was void.

“By analysing the various evidences used by the Tribunal to sack him, Governor Yusuf was supposed to have read the handwriting on the wall,” the statement went on, adding that the evidence was so strong that it would be extremely difficult for any court to ignore it.

“I am using this medium as a brother to advise him to shelve any move to drag his defeat to the Supreme Court,” Kwankwaso continued. He ought to acknowledge that now is not the right moment for him to serve as the state’s governor.
