JUST IN: New Lagos Speaker Meranda Seeks Governor’s Blessings in First Official Visit
Newly elected Lagos Speaker Mojisola Meranda makes her first official visit to the Governor’s Council, seeking blessings and support for her leadership.
A day following her election as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda visited members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) on Tuesday. She aimed to “inform them about what transpired at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have received.”
Meranda joined members of GAC, the top decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, as well as other State Assembly members for a meeting at Lagos House in Marina.
Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, was appointed as speaker on Monday following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa. His 10-year tenure ended when over two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted to remove him due to alleged misconduct and various other offenses.
Meranda, formerly Obasa’s deputy until Monday, was promptly elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first woman to lead the legislative body in this South-West state.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, was initially elected to the House in 2007. He has served continuously since his initial election. He became speaker in June 2015 but was removed from this position in January 2025.
At the same time, Abiodun Tobun, an Assembly member representing Epe Constituency 1, stated that parliament members removed Obasa from his position as Speaker to preserve the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House.
Tobun informed reporters that the lawmakers in the 40-member Assembly unanimously agreed on the decision to impeach Obasa.
He stated, “The Constitution clearly grants the House authority to regulate its proceedings. Therefore, the members have decided they are done with Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa and today unanimously agreed that Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat will be the new Speaker of the House.”
Thus, a resolution agreed upon by all members of parliament was reached. We cannot afford to let our House weaken; we have a responsibility to both our constituents and Lagos State. It’s essential that we restore the sanctity and integrity of this House.
