JUST IN: More Governors being kept vigilant for hidden funds – Bawa
According to Abdulrasheed Bawa, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the commission is now keeping an eye on six governors for possible money laundering, up from three previously.
After a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr Bawa talked to State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He declined to provide a number for the increase, stating that he did not want to be misled.
When the Federal Government announced its intention to redesign the naira notes two weeks ago, Bawa made hints about the EFCC’s surveillance activities centred on three Governors, whom he said were being observed for money laundering.
The proposal to redesign the naira was lauded by the anti-corruption Tzar, who described it as an important step in the nation’s battle against financial crimes and other types of corruption.
He asserts that the enormous quantity of money that has escaped the authority of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) makes it impossible to track down financial crimes, stressing that the revamping of the naira presents a chance for the government to recover control over the movement of money in the nation.
