Governor Namadi of Jigawa State announces that the tragic tanker explosion has resulted in 181 fatalities, with 80 individuals in critical condition. Learn more about the incident and ongoing rescue efforts.

Governor Umah Namadi of Jigawa State has reported that the number of fatalities from the tanker explosion in the state has reached 181, while an additional 80 individuals are hospitalized in critical condition.

Namadi, who visited the Presidential Villa on Tuesday to update President Bola Tinubu about the situation, disclosed that the inferno impacted 210 families in total.

Remember, the incident took place on Tuesday, October 15, when a petrol-laden truck traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State exploded in Majia within Taura LGA of Jigawa State.

The incident led to the immediate deaths of over 100 people and left many others injured while they were collecting fuel.

The governor announced that the state has formed a high-level committee, chaired by a retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG), to investigate the underlying causes of the incident and provide recommendations for government action.

While speaking to State House correspondents, Namadi stated, “As of today, around 181 people have died and approximately 80 are hospitalized. Additionally, about 210 families have been affected by this situation.”

I visited to inform Mr. President about the tragic incident in Jigawa State, where many lives were lost.

We believed it was important to update Mr. President on the actions we are taking as a government and also express our gratitude for promptly dispatching a delegation when this incident occurred.

Certainly, the state government has assumed responsibility for covering the medical expenses of all those affected. We’ve implemented numerous interventions to support families in maintaining their livelihoods. Additionally, the President has pledged to step in and provide assistance to the victims as well.

The state government has formed a high-powered committee, led by a retired DIG, to investigate the underlying causes of the incident and provide recommendations on subsequent actions.

“Additionally, keep in mind that the President has instructed the Corps Marshal to promptly investigate this issue and develop a permanent solution for it within the country.”
