Ivory Coast, the hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023, began their campaign with a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau at Alassane Ouattara Stadium.

Seko Fofana opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a brilliant shot from outside the box, while Jean-Philippe Krasso extended the lead in the 58th minute with an acrobatic finish. Despite missing several players due to injuries, the Ivorians managed to secure a positive start in front of a hopeful crowd of 60,000. Although Guinea-Bissau had some missed opportunities, the three points were all that mattered for Ivory Coast at this early stage of the tournament.
