Italian PM Warns: Is Israel Falling into Hamas’s Trap?
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her backing for Israel, emphasising that the conflict in Gaza was initiated by surprise attacks from Hamas. During a news conference after the G7 summit, Meloni advocated for the recognition of both Israel and Palestine’s right to live in peace and security.
Meloni cautioned against Israel falling into a trap set by Hamas to isolate the nation, urging supporters of West Jerusalem to clearly articulate their commitment to its safety. She underscored Italy’s alignment with this stance and emphasised the importance of acknowledging the origins of the conflict.
In response to inquiries about the G7 leaders’ silence on the Israeli offensive in Gaza and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, Meloni pointed out the responsibility of the party that instigated the violence, which she clarified was not Israel. She highlighted the casualties and hostages resulting from the Hamas attack that prompted the IDF’s operation in Gaza.
The Prime Minister also stressed the Palestinians’ right to a peaceful state of their own as a crucial step towards resolving the ongoing conflict. Meloni concluded by emphasising the necessity of engaging in dialogue with all parties involved in the conflict to address the underlying issues.
The international community has criticised Israel’s actions against Hamas and the blockade of Gaza, with some countries considering sanctions. Despite facing diminishing Western support due to the escalating crisis, Israeli authorities have defended their operations as necessary to combat terrorism and ensure national security.
