Israeli Olympic Team Doxxed, French Cybercrime Unit Takes Action
French cybercrime authorities react promptly to the doxxing of the Israeli Olympic team, focusing on protection and investigation.
According to police sources, AFP reported on Saturday that the responsibility of erasing leaked private details of Israeli athletes before the Summer Olympic Games in Paris lies with The French Anti-Cybercrime Office (OFAC).
Personal information, such as documents, addresses, medical records and military service details of the Israeli delegation members were exposed by Zeus hacker group on Friday. Ynet reported that the hackers alleged to have revealed what activities Israeli soldiers engaged in during Olympics.
The event was categorized as doxxing, which is a harmful act of publishing personal information on the internet. It was then reported to Pharos, a French platform that marks illicitly shared material. Israeli news outlets have said that the hackers attempted to intimidate athletes through online methods while pretending to be members of a far-right student group in France.
According to Israeli officials, Iran’s “digital terrorism” campaign aimed at intimidating Israel athletes and causing psychological terror. Sports Minister Miki Zohar accused Tehran of being behind the scheme.
Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, informed his French counterpart Stephane Sejourne on Thursday of an alleged Iranian plan to attack the Israeli team in Paris.
According to a letter seen by Reuters, Katz claimed that there are individuals who intend to spoil the celebratory atmosphere of this happy occasion. Additionally, Katz alleged that Iran was responsible for multiple acts of arson on France’s high-speed rail system prior to the start of the Games, resulting in traffic disruptions.
The Iranian mission to the UN has dismissed allegations of involvement as “lies and deceit”, while Tehran denies any connection.
To guarantee safety throughout the Olympics, a total of 18,000 French soldiers have been stationed alongside regular police forces. Additionally, the Israeli delegation has received heightened round-the-clock security measures from authorities.
