International Peace Day: Peace Corps and Rotary Club urge Nigerians to live in harmony

The need of promoting peaceful coexistence in Nigeria among citizens with various racial and religious backgrounds has been emphasised by Rotary International District 9125 and the Peace Corps of Nigeria.

They made this statement during a peace awareness walk that was held on Thursday in Abuja in honour of the 2023 International Day of Peace.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the peace day, which is observed every year on September 21, aims to lessen violence and reinforce the principles of peace around the world.

According to NAN, the subject for this year is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals.”

Dr. Dickson Akoh, the National Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, urged Nigerians to live in harmony with one another and to abstain from social vices that would render their nation incapable of being governed.

The fact that Nigeria is still one nation despite a number of difficulties that have resulted in senseless loss of life and property is cause for celebration.

We want to utilise this day to urge young people who have started using violence against one another or the government to cease.

We deserve peace, he continued, because it is the fundamental and ultimate purpose of the Sustainable Development Goals, to which Nigeria is a signatory.

Additionally, Mr. Sani Ahmed, District Governor of Rotary International District 9125, advised Nigerians to become peace champions because doing so will have various positive effects on the nation.

“This is a very significant day for Rotarians because one of the main causes we are fighting for is world peace, which is also one of Rotary’s seven priority areas.

“Everything we do at Rotary is aimed at giving people hope so they can live in harmony with one another and the rest of the planet.

Ahmed declared, “We think that with optimism, peace will triumph.

The campaign’s purpose, according to Princess Okoro, District 9125’s nominee for district governor, was to raise awareness of the need to advance peace in the nation.

Without peace, harmony cannot exist, and genuine progress in the nation will be challenging, in her opinion.

“Every region of the federation is honouring it at the same time as we are doing this today.

We want everyone to value, preach, sing, and adore peace, she said. “All we are talking about is peace.”

Rotary International is dedicated to fostering peace and harmony among Nigerians, said Mr. Roy Nwafor, District Chair, Peace and Conflict Resolution, District 9125.

“We want to promote peace in Nigeria while enacting the pillars of peace, beginning with an efficient executive branch, a stable business climate, and a fair distribution of wealth.

“We also want to encourage respect for other people’s rights, information freedom, excellent neighbour relations, a high level of human capital, and low levels of corruption.

For peace and conflict resolution, Rotary International focuses on these measures, according to Nwafor.
