Nigerian musician Crown Uzama, better known by his stage name Shallipopi, has shared stories of how he was turned down by a number of friends when he first moved from Benin City to Lagos in order to pursue his musical career.

He claimed that after tricking them into thinking he would only be there for four days, a group of boys eventually consented to put him up for accommodation.

The crooner of “Obapluto” claimed that, happily, he was able to support his donors by helping them pay their bills after landing a job in Port Harcourt.

In an interview with Zero Conditions, Shallipopi stated, “Before my song ‘Elon Musk’ blew.” When I arrived in Lagos, I was trying to find a place to stay. Then, because some of my friends in Lagos had previously told me they enjoyed my song “Elon Musk,” I began getting in touch with them. These friends had been showing off their flamboyant lifestyle on WhatsApp status updates. All four of the folks I reached out to indicated I couldn’t stay with them.

“I finally located someone who invited me to stay with them. I told them I would only be here for four days, but I was lying. I received a performance in Port Harcourt with just my song, “Elon Musk,” which wasn’t really getting any popularity at the time, after spending four days there. However, my airfare was covered by the organisers, and the charge was N50,000. My roommates were determined to accompany me. My first flight was the one.

“A lot of money in music, even an up-and-coming artist with just one hit song can make so much,” he also revealed during the interview.

After his song “Elon Musk” went popular on social media earlier this year, Shallipopi became well-known. Along with well-known rapper Zlatan Ibile, he remixed the song, cemented its status as a street anthem.
