Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, better known by his stage name Oxlade, a Nigerian singer, has described how he briefly slept out under a bridge after evading his family to pursue his musical dreams.
He claimed that because his lecturer father disapproved of him choosing music, he had to run away and work multiple menial jobs to support himself.
The singer of “Away” claimed that occasionally he camped out at Ojuelegba Barrack Bridge and sold BRT bus tickets.
During an appearance on the Afrobeats podcast, which is hosted by Adesope Olajide, Oxlade made this disclosure.
I used to occasionally sleep near Ojuelegba Barrack Bridge, the man recalled. To get by, I worked multiple low-paying jobs. I was distributing BRT passes.
The performer added that composing classical music was more appealing to him than writing popular tunes.
According to Oxlade, if you don’t take your time to write songs or produce anything else, it will seem hurried. You hurried in, and you hurried out.
“Classics are what I’m looking for; I’m not looking for hits. ‘Away’ is at least four or three years old, but it’s still popular. One year later, “Ku Lo Sa” is still a banger. The “O2” just suddenly went off last year. Despite being old, these songs have relevance right now.
“I don’t want to reveal any names, but I am aware of numerous musicians who released songs last year that became huge hits, but who are no longer with us. I want to leave you with a lasting impression, not to wow you.
