Haitian Police Demand Better Protection After Kenyan Officer’s Death
Following the tragic death of a Kenyan officer, Haitian police are calling for improved security measures to protect law enforcement in the troubled nation. Read more on their demands.
On Monday, Haitian police officers demanded enhanced protection following the killing of a Kenyan officer involved in a U.N.-backed mission by gunmen.
Garry Jean Baptiste, the leader of the police union, called on the government to enhance resources and support in response to gangs that now dominate 85% of the capital and are continuously broadening their reach. Speaking in front of the prime minister’s office, he cautioned authorities by saying, “Address this security threat earnestly so we can save more lives.”
These demands arise following the fatal shooting of a Kenyan officer in Haiti’s gang-controlled Artibonite region. Jean Baptiste also expressed criticism over delayed salaries and urged for financial assistance to support the families of fallen officers.
In response, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé promised “substantial investment” in police equipment, stating that Haiti was engaged in a battle against gangs with the goal of restoring security for future elections.
Kenya has sent hundreds of officers to support Haiti’s struggling police force, joined by reinforcements from Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador.
