Eight persons were hurt on Saturday in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, by a gas cylinder explosion.
A petrol attendant and seven students from Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin were among them.
According to State Fire Service spokesman Hassan Adekunle, the incident happened at Destiny Villa, Dola Abimbola Street, Elekoyangan area, Ilorin East Local Government, in the State, at around 21:32 hours.
“The firemen promptly departed from the station and upon arrival at the scene, they encountered a building with about 17 self-contained rooms fully ablaze.
Eight people were injured, and four rooms were impacted. The firefighters used their expert firefighting skills to control and put out the fire, even though it was extremely fierce.
After some research, it was discovered that a local gas station employee was refuelling a gas cylinder that was several metres above the ground.
Gas was released from the charged replenishing hose at the same time that the cylinder collapsed and burst. This made the fire worse, injuring the gas attendant as well as seven students from Kwara State Polytechnic.
The representative went on to say that N14.6 million worth of property was damaged in the fire.
Prince Falade John, the director of the Kwara State Fire Service, sent a team to check on the injured students on Sunday in response to the event.
In order to stop fire disasters, the director also pleaded with the public to prioritise safety precautions.
