The former ABU vice chancellor and bursar are charged with fraud totaling N1 billion by the EFCC.

Professor Ibrahim Garba, the recently retired vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, has been charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with conspiracy to launder N1 billion.

Along with Ibrahim Shehu Usman, the former bursar of the university, the former VC was dragged before the court.

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the EFCC charged the two with eight counts of theft and money laundering that added up to more than N1 billion. They went before Justice A.A. Bello of the State High Court.

Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC, said in a statement: “The arraignment followed months of quiet investigation prompted by a petition accusing the pair of misusing funds intended for the refurbishment of the well-known Kongo Conference Hotel in Zaria.”

The investigation found that the defendants reportedly stole over N1 billion and diverted money to their personal accounts from several institutional accounts.
