Fifa has introduced a comprehensive five-pillar plan aimed at addressing the issue of racist abuse within the realm of football.

The organization revealed that they had engaged in an extensive consultation process with both current and former players who are deeply committed to instigating positive change within the sport.

One of the key proposals within this plan involves implementing a standardized crossed-hands gesture that players can use to signal instances of racism occurring during matches.

This gesture is intended to streamline communication and response mechanisms when faced with such incidents on the field.

The ‘Global Stand Against Racism’ proposal is scheduled to be presented to all 211 members of Fifa during the annual congress in Bangkok.

This initiative aims to garner support and commitment from all member associations in the fight against racism within football.

The first pillar of the proposal focuses on making racism a specific offense that is explicitly outlined in the disciplinary codes of all member associations. It also emphasizes the implementation of severe sanctions, including the forfeiture of matches, as consequences for racist behavior.

Fifa has declared its intention to take immediate action in cases of racism by pausing, suspending, or even abandoning games when such incidents occur. This proactive approach underscores the organization’s commitment to eradicating racism from the sport.

In pillar three of the plan, Fifa advocates for racism to be recognized as a criminal offense in every country. The organization also pledges to advocate for stringent penalties in nations where racism is already considered a criminal act.

Additionally, Fifa plans to collaborate with schools and governments to promote educational initiatives that aim to create a future devoid of racism.

Furthermore, an anti-racism panel comprising former players will be established to monitor and assess the progress of the proposal.
