The unions asked the government to pay the salaries that had been withheld, saying that their members had not taken part in the ASUU strike the year before.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ two split labour unions, the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), have both received certificates of registration from Minister of Labor and Employment Chris Ngige (ASUU).
The labour minister cautioned the unions against ongoing industrial action and asked them to embrace discussion anytime they have a disagreement with their employers during the official presentation of certificates to the two unions in Abuja.
Ngige said that the federal government will continue to enforce the “no work, no pay” rule against any union that goes on strike.
The labour minister officially launched two labour unions in Nigeria’s academic system when he handed these certificates of registration to the CONUA and NAMDA executives.

During the fervour of an eight-month ASUU strike in October 2022, the two unions gained notoriety.
The minister urged the newly formed unions to adhere to the labour regulations.
The unions said their members were not on strike with ASUU last year and urged the government to release their withheld salaries in their individual remarks.
The Nigerian university system has recently had a lot of problems. This is because academic and non-academic workers have been going on strikes a lot, which has messed up the academic schedule.
