An eight-member inter-ministerial committee has been established by the Federal Government to investigate the operations of private universities that have been established in the past 15 years. Led by Professor J.D. Amin, the committee has been given the additional responsibility of investigating the fraudulent activities related to degree certificates by both local and foreign universities in Nigeria.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, SAN, inaugurated the committee in Abuja and emphasized that this initiative is crucial for maintaining the integrity of educational qualifications in the country. Mamman further stated that any individuals found to possess fake certificates, as uncovered by the committee, will be dismissed from their positions and face legal consequences.
The issue of ‘degree mills’ gained attention once again after an undercover journalist exposed the ease with which he obtained a degree and participated in the national youth service program. The committee’s work will also involve identifying private universities that are operating unlawfully after obtaining licenses.
The Minister emphasized the importance of the committee’s task and urged them to carry out their responsibilities diligently and without fear.
He assured them of the ministry’s full support and clarified that the purpose of the exercise was not to target or persecute anyone. The committee consists of various members, including Professor J.D. Amin and Mr. Chris Maiyaki, who bring their expertise to the table.
The committee’s terms of reference include investigating illegal universities, verifying allegations of degree certificate fraud, and reviewing existing policies and procedures related to accreditation and certification.
They are also tasked with examining the role of government officials in facilitating the procurement of fake certificates and evaluating the processes for recognizing and accrediting foreign universities and programs.
