Former Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi announces his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling a potential shift in his political trajectory.

Bolaji Abdullahi, a former Minister of Sports, has stepped down from his membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bolaji, a dedicated supporter of former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, also held the position of Commissioner for Education during Bukola’s tenure as governor of Kwara State.

He previously served as the Senior Special Assistant on Strategy to Bukola during the initial phase of his administration in the state.

In his resignation letter dated December 16, 2024, addressed to the Ubandawaki Ward chairman of the party in Ilorin, the former sports minister stated: “After ample reflection, I have reached the difficult conclusion that this is my only viable option at present.”

“Mr. Chairman, I’d like to convey my gratitude through you to the party’s leadership for providing me with opportunities to serve both the state and country under its banner, as well as for the memorable moments we’ve shared,” stated the letter.

The letter was also forwarded to the state party chairman and the Ilorin West Local Government Area chapter’s party chairman.

DAILY POST remembers that Bolaji, who served as the sports minister, resigned from his position under former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan amid a national crisis within the party. This turmoil led to the formation of the New PDP and resulted in around five governors and other prominent figures defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection, spearheaded by Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amaechi, and others, played a significant role in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory during his first term.
