Enner Valenica of Ecuador had headed the ball into the net after three minutes of a frenetic opening to the game at the stadium constructed like a Bedouin tent, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
After Valencia dribbled past Qatari goalkeeper Saad Alsheeb, who grabbed his shin and the referee pointed to the spot, Ecuador did take the lead thirteen minutes later. The penalty was calmly rolled in by Valencia.
